Unemployment benefits (depending on the jurisdiction also called employment insurance, unemployment insurance, or unemployment compensation; hereinafter, the Benefits) is a set of benefits designed to provide compensation to those employees who have been laid off or otherwise separated from employment without their intent.


Definitions

According to Labor Relations and Collective Bargaining by Michael R. Carrell and Christina Heavrin (10th edition),

Employment insurance. Established in 1935 and funded through payroll taxes paid by employers, the program is designed to provide compensation, after a brief waiting period, to those employees who have been laid off from employment. Recipients are expected to seek employment actively.
