Guided Tour of CNM Jitsi 2023-4-5 - is the CNMCyber Guided Tours event on 5 April.

Guided Tour of CNM Jitsi 2023-3-29 is the predecessor event.

Meeting subject

Me talked about the audiences that are interested in our meetings and came to the conclusion that there should be 3 meetings for one product: users, administrators, and system administrators. We discussed CNM Jitsi user features (changed username, performance settings, security settings, backend, and looked at how the chat and video recording feature worked). We also looked at how to use sysadmin access to change the logo link and the default username.

This is a series of CNMCyber Guided Tours, today we will continue to talk about CNM Jitsi, I think we can divide our meeting into these two notional blocks: the first is to continue the issues that we did not have time to discuss last time, and the second part is also to continue the last meeting question about customization,

Natalia will let me go and change the logo or something else.

In general, in principle, I was thinking about it, because we're going from admin to sysadmin, maybe in the future we just split, let's say it will be Jitsi for users, Jitsi for admins, Power User in English is usually used for users with advanced rights, actually administrators, and for sysadmins, for example, changing the logo is a task for system administrators.

Maybe we'll kind of put it in perspective for the next these very, we'll break it up, because these are, after all, completely different tasks, I think, but okay, as long as we do as it's done. We can try it,

we'll torture Sonia. Well, the idea, Sonya and I have corresponded a few times, I mean, what is the idea? Now with these Guided Tours, I want to implement the idea we discussed with Sergei, that is, we'll say that we'll have this kind of tour through our app, We will use them then, but also Jitsi, if someone has some problems, these people can, let's say, look at their screen and we can advise this person something, that is, if the person has it, we tell him there, we show him, the person walks somewhere, if some problems or when such problems, he can show the screen and we can advise this person. We won't do a lot, I mean, I think we'll take up to 8 people at the most, let them pay 25 rubles each, which is $200 an hour, but in principle, not bad, maybe for an hour and a half, not so bad, I think this is how I see it.

So we're trying, we're kind of doing a prototype of these events

Yeah, but anyway, in these meetings, we're more on the sysadmin side, and I think that's more interesting for people because it's more complicated, you know, to deal with this product from the user side.

you can, in principle, do it yourself. No, I don't think so, it's kind of completely different...

one person wants to just try, see how to use, for example, I have an interview tomorrow with a company that uses Jitsi, yes, and I need to, I put on my resume that I use Jitsi, I Jitsi this used ten years ago and Jitsi these have already changed in ten years, what is my option? My option is to go on the internet, look for videos, they're all different, they're not clear who, not clear what

and it takes a lot of time, which I don't have, for me to find what I need, to have the latest version or whatever, so for me, let's say I don't need the admin part, I don't need the sysadmin part,

If my job is related to administration, then I don't need the user part, I don't need the sysadmin part, I only need how to administer, what checkboxes to put there, who can raise their hand, who can't raise their hand, who to cut off microphones, who not to cut off the microphone. If my job is a sysadmin job, then I need the sysadmin part,

maybe how it's going to be, I mean, basically, maybe some kind of overview of this kind of general, just, look, there's this, there's that, there's that, there's that. When I say admin, I mean, power user - a user with advanced privileges, and when I say sysadmin, I mean the administrator of the network already. yes When we describe, we can just say that there is this, there is that, so, for this you have to go in, for this... But the people who are going to be interested, they're going to be completely different, so I think to separate them, I mean, in the long run, let's say if we're already doing this further as a business, let's say we can do it kind of customize, if you don't want to wait until your event, but you want to see it now, right? Pay $200 there and we'll do it all for you, the person will come out there we'll give you a VM, you'll come in and you'll walk around with the person, and while you're waiting for the person, here's a video from our old event and watch it and you'll be ready for something. That is, I think that all the same, these are different audiences, that is, in general some kind of will be just to present people that look there's this kind of access, there's this kind of access, eo is, like user access, admin access, there's access from the server, server administrator, logically speaking, Natalia, or not? Of course, I mean, I can't imagine, let's say, if I represent my family and friends there, let's say, that I have to explain to my husband how to change the logo, he doesn't need that, he needs how to work at the conference, everything. Yes , again, these are different audiences, so I think it makes sense to have, let's say we'll have CNM Jitsi and we'll have CNM Jitsi for Users,

is one series, one type, CNM Jitsi for Admins is another part, CNM Jitsi for Sysadmins will be the third part.

I think it makes sense to decouple, I mean, we're just piling on for now, building up experience, but we need to crystallize something out of it. Well let's say from the next product we can try to do 3 meetings differently anyway, we're splitting into different meetings, and it's the basic idea....

and then we'll have 3 meetings for one product, we can do next week.

Let's go, okay, that's me putting my two cents in.

Okay, then we'll just start with questions, Natalia will tell us what I didn't have time to ask last time,

It will probably be interesting information for users, but for admins, too. What features can be connected in Jitsi, how they are connected and how to use them?

So you hear, right? fine. Jitsi is basically a very simple program, that is, all that can be done by a normal user, the first thing we have to do there is to change the screen name, and to do this we have to go into a conference, let's see which of us has what screen name. Let's say my screen name is Natalia and in order to change it I just click on, I'll show you my screen name.

I don't see Natalia by the way, I see Sonya, I see mine - ii. And Fellow Jitser is a bot?

Yes, I see two Fellow Jitser - one is a bot and the other is Natalia. Natalia is not a name.

I don't have a name, is it not shown? Let's see, in order to change the name, next to the red tube I press three dots. Three dots - this is usually more some kind of action, more some kind of information. So I choose me, right? Yes indeed, I see that there is no screen name, now we put it here and yay

Next, what else we can do as users, we can set the quality, see the statistics, for this we have at the top of the screen is an icon that usually shows the quality of communication, in this case is such a chart, there are 4 users seen, you can click and see who was here how many minutes

and for how long.

I'm trying to change my name, there are settings. No, you click on the three dots there and there at the very top, at the very top, there I had... Settings... No, it's even higher, above invite people, and above

I'm nothing, no, ah, that's it, I got it.

[laughs]

Changed it, cool.

Cool, yeah, then there's the quality of communication performance setting, we push,

which is better for us, less, I mean we need faster or we need better quality?

I chose quality for me, what did you choose for yourself?

see

I have Highest quality.

So, Sonya, what do you have?

Yes, me too. Okay, now we'll try a feature in Jitsi like a shared document.

I'll throw in a little excel document and we can look at it and try to edit it together.

Even edit it?

We open up a chat room

and I'll throw some document into the chat room.

What do you want us to do, click on a link or something? Yes, you can click on the link, yes. Phone. Yeah, it's just some example, but we can kind of edit it together, whatever we want. So in a conference, you can use these kind of, a shared conference like we're sitting in the same room and working on the document we want. Well that's Google Docs.

What else? Here's how users.

I thought we could be on the same screen, but the screen is different for everybody, well yeah

it's basically like, Google Docs is by itself,

and Jitsi is on its own, just like a wandering document. Yes, it often happened in our schools that some people break into a conference and start behaving badly; here we have Security Options, you also have to press three dots and you can choose a password, but it's the one who opened the conference

Security Options? Yes.

Can you? Can someone add a password for the conference?

Well, yes, and can enable lobby

it's similar to Zoom, it's the same in Zoom,

similar option, here I had, let's say, the first Chinese people today, є it's a new semester, and their my college, which doesn't do everything very quickly, that is, or rather not even that. The Chinese university didn't send in the names of the students, as it were, and so they weren't put on the zoom. Usually I come in and they already come in on their own, but today I had to sort of mechanically confirm everyone who came in. And if we do this, I'm sure it's similar to Zoom, which means that if someone joins, we can either confirm that person or not. Well we can exclude the person, right or not? I think so, let's see, here I choose for example, so, there is a kick out, I can kick out Natalia,

she kicked herself, I didn't click on anything.

Yes, well, you can embed this conference somewhere on the site or set up some keys, shortcuts, I think it's not very interesting. And then you can start recording and record, it's interesting that at these conferences the recording is done with the permission of the participants, that is, if I don't allow it, I won't participate.

It's an interesting function, a very simple childish function to change the background, let's see now. So, what can we get here? I'm not showing the screens now, am I? I'm showing them now.

I've got this light blur by default here, you can put yourself somewhere at sea or in a room or in nature,

what everyone wants, but I think when the contour is a little blurred, that is, I like the light blur best.

It's similar to Zoom , there too. Of course, these are all apps, they chase each other.

But they recommend

for the highest quality to have green in the background, green is the most... pleasant? No, not nice, but it's technologically better for all these pictures, then they overlay the best quality, because if it's not green, it can kind of float,

so it doesn't always distinguish. You can see how they make movies in Hollywood, let's say they shoot all these scenes that have computer effects, they usually shoot on a green background, and then they overlay the computer effects.

Okay, and we can record the conference, which is also very interesting.

We can invite. One of the things I like is links to a conference. You can't do that in Zoom; here we have a conference, and here's what we called it, let's say CNM Jitsi on April 4. I think it's very convenient and beautiful. So today we prepared a little lesson like this for Sonya, we'll try to change the Jitsi logo, what we did last time, for this we prepared a special installation, which is not on the working server, with which you can experiment, as we were recommended

all accesses further to Sonya, now, Sonya, you have the floor and

You can go to this link and we'll see what we can do there

I also wanted to add a little bit about the recording function for the user, because I use it, and it's very interesting that before the end of the stream, be sure to finish the recording, otherwise it will not be saved, I think that's useful information.

Yes, yes, very useful knowledge.

Then I'll start showing the screen and we'll go in, right?

Now we're on a remote server where we've installed ... to install Jiti.

In order for us to walk around this server we can use a command to change the directory which is called cd, in this case we will use Midnight Commander, it is such a window manager,

to run it you have to type the beginning "mc" in small English letters,

because Linux is case sensitive.

Type. So I'm the one who can type here?

Oh, did I do that?

Yeah, I guess so. Okay, what do we write again? The abbreviation for MC is Midnight Commander, the first two letters. Yes, after we type MC, we press Enter.

And so we're in a full manager like this, in order to make it bigger, I press this combination of Ctrl ++, in order that we can see. You can see that the structure

of the Linux operating system, it's completely different than the structure of Windows.

You can see some directories that we can go into. In order to change the logo,

we have to go into a special directory which is in the user's directory, Usr,

in order to go to another directory, Sonya, just press the down arrow and look for the directory, not with the mouse exactly, but with the arrow on your keyboard.

Which side is it, the right side?

Sonya had never seen Microsoft DOS, the first program, it was already Windows when she started working. Look, Sonya, like this, with the arrow down.

And look for the Usr directory, right? A little bit higher up. To get into that directory, just press Enter.

This is not something I make up, it is, that is, the files themselves Jitsi installed in this directory, to further determine what we do, go into the directory Share, it is penultimate.

So we're looking for the directory Jitsi Meet, look how easy it is, everything is fine.

All the other directories, are these all for Jitsi or are they all applications in general?

Only for Jitsi

Because, as it were, here is the first path on the left visible home/jitsi.

Okay, okay, and here we look, look at the structure, there are folders, which you see in yellow highlighted, here's a file that we will edit, look, in order to edit our file, this file is called interface_config.js.

An interesting feature in this commander, everything is written at the bottom, what you can do with these files, please look at the bottom, it says 1 - help, 2 - menu, 3 - view,

but that doesn't mean numbers, those are function keys: F1, F2, F3, F4. Let's press edit file. Okay, F4.

And the first thing we'll do is something that's simple and that you can show, something that Igor likes. On our website, we've done an installation called jitsi.hotcoe.com, look at this, look, this is the standard installation of Jitsi, it's absolutely not modified in any way and here at the top left is the logo, which we can change in principle, but we'll make something simpler. So when we click on this logo, we go to jitsi.org, Igor often doesn't like it very much and we're going to make like

this kind of change to change that link.

It's not that I don't like it, I just want people to go to our resource in the long run, so that they register with us, and why should we advertise this jitsi.org, that is, we can them, of course, we do not hide that we use jitsi, but we need our customers.

So we can just right now in this file, this is where we can make this change, right now what we're going to do is we're going to look for this link, there's many ways, basically I know it has to be in this file. In order to find us this link, we press F7, see, search, and press and look for this link jitsi.org.

And here we have a beautiful thing, here we have jitsi_watermark_link, so let's change it for something.

So what are we going to change it to?

I don't know, to some of our resources, let's say jitsi, let's say pravka.bskol.com.

That can be erased, right? Yes

Let's write wiki.cnmcyber.com then.

We need to save this file, to do that see what key we need to press. Save - F2.

Press Enter. Let's see the result, now I'm showing the screen, so

look, here jitsi meet, but this is right here, when we have done some changes, it makes sense to refresh the site page, press to do this,

here press F5, in principle, I already see that the link has changed. Here, but Sonya can try and see where we go, check

here's

which means that we went to our Wiki page.

also we can look in this file, now we also

see in this file that we change

we can see what else we can change, for example

I see that there's this default Fellow Jitser, we can change, I don't know CNM Cyber there. Cyberer?

Where exactly? didn't see

Default_username, if someone does not give his name, the default is Fellow Jitser

Let's try to change it. We have a bot now hanging fellow Jitser, it should change.

Just a fellow does not matter, ah, then we will not see the change, well, any, the letter A

I want to point out that here, it's a link,

it's, you see, highlighted in this orange color, and there are two oblique lines in front, and each program may have it differently,

but in this case, the two oblique lines mean comment, so if we leave it like that now, nothing would change. Here, it's lit up with new colors, we're saving it. Wow, I didn't know that one.

Well that doesn't mean it's going to work now, because stuff happens. Sonja left a gap up front, too, maybe, yeah. So we'll see now. It hasn't changed. No, we're going to try to do some,

some kind of conference.

I guess in order to try it, we have to add something, go in there and see what happens.

And we'll see that the name has really changed.

I mean, basically, it's kind of okay, it's fine. In fact, there are very funny situations when you want to change the name Jitsi Meet, and this name, it's in 150,000 files with very similar names, and you think, you change it and it changes everything, but no way, in this case we can say, we're lucky.

In principle, I think that will be enough for today, not to climb too much...

CNM Jitsi Guided Tour 2023-4-12 is the successor event.
