Prototype. A partial or simulated approximation of the solution for the purpose of eliciting or verifying requirements with stakeholders.

According to Product Manager's Handbook by Gorchels (2nd edition),

Prototype. A mock-up or preliminary version of a new product used for research purposes.

According to the INCOSE Systems Engineering Handbook (4th edition),

Prototype. A production‐ready demonstration model developed under engineering supervision that is specification compliant and represents what manufacturing should replicate.
