A system is a set of people and things working together as parts of one mechanism or an interconnecting network to form a complex whole. A software system refers to a set of inter-related software applications that produce unified results.

Definition

According to Management by Robbins and Coulter (14th edition),

System. A set of interrelated and interdependent parts arranged in a manner that produces a unified whole.

According to the BABOK Guide (3rd edition),

System. A set of interdependent components that interact in various ways to produce a set of desired outcomes.

According to the INCOSE Systems Engineering Handbook (4th edition),

System. An integrated set of elements, subsystems, or assemblies that accomplish a defined objective. These elements include products (hardware, software, firmware), processes, people, information, techniques, facilities, services, and other support elements (InCOSE) A combination of interacting elements organized to achieve one or more stated purposes (ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288).

According to the ITIL Foundation 4e by Axelos,

System. A combination of interacting elements organized and maintained to achieve one or more stated purposes.
