CNM Cert (previously known as CNM Campus and CNM Certs; hereinafter, the Cert) is the learning management system of the Career Network Ministry (CNM). The Cert is the service of CNM Cyber that allows for learning and certification management.

The CNM Cyber Team designs and the Friends Of CNM delivers the Cert to its users at absolutely no cost. This Service is not available to the general public; only those users who have obtained the NetConsumer role can access it.

CNM Academy

CNM Academy previously known as Moodle is open-source modular e-learning software written in PHP and distributed under the GNU General Public License. Developed on pedagogical principles, Moodle is used for blended learning, distance education, flipped classroom and other e-learning projects in schools, universities, workplaces and other sectors.

The name is an acronym for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment. With customizable management features, it is used to create private websites with online courses for educators and trainers to achieve learning goals.

Technology used

The System is built on the CNM Certware. Being a part of CNM Cloud, this software particularly includes:

  1. One instance of Moodle hereinafter, CNM Academy or the Academy, which is e-learning software which is also the basis for this brief course and the one we are going to focus our attention on.
  2. One instance of KSA Certs, which is the special part of Opplet.net that handles examination questions.

In this course we are going to look at roles and responsibilities of CNM Academy/NetConsumer roles. We are also going have a look at course set up, course enrollment, progress tracking, access restriction and how to create and manage a quiz on CNM Academy.

CNM Academy Roles

In CNM Academy, a role is a collection of permissions defined for the whole system that can be assigned to a NetConsumer. The combination of roles define a NetConsumer`s ability to make changes to pages on CNM Academy. The most common role is the student`s and teacher`s role in the context of a course. In this course we are going to look at five roles;

  1. Admins
  2. Course Creators
  3. Teachers
  4. Students
  5. Guests

Admins

Managing overall responsibilities is one of the main responsibilities of the system administrator, using; Administration > Site administration > Users > Permissions > Define roles tool. Define roles tool is the place to add custom roles or add existing ones. The "Manage roles" tab, allows the system administrator to edit any one of the numerous different capabilities associated with any role. The "Allow role assignments", "Allow role overrides" and "Allow role switches" contain a matrix which give the ability for a specific role to work with other specific roles. Roles and permissions are specified by default but can be modified by administrators and managers

Course Creator

As the name suggests, a course creator is a CNM Academy user who has the ability to create a course on CNM Academy. The course creator role is assigned by the system administrator.

    • The course creator by default is enrolled into the course they have created as a teacher and is able to enroll students into the course.
    • As a teacher, a course creator is able to view hidden courses and those that are in progress.
    • Consequently, the course creator is able to develop quizzes and grading system, view student progress and restrict student’s enrollment into a course.
    • A course creator can act as as a program coordinator and can delete a course and restore course backups.
    • Course Creator can edit the course settings and enroll new users.
    • They can also view hidden courses and restore course backups. The backup function would, however, be only limited to the course they have created.

Teachers

The teachers` role is assigned by the system administrator to a CNM Academy user. As a teacher, a CNM Academy user is granted permission to enroll students, crate quizzes, add activities and set up grading system a swell as grade students. A teacher can also assign non-editing teacher`s role and student`s role to other CNM Academy users. Anon-editing teacher is granted permission to grade students but cannot alter or delete any oF the materials within the course. A teacher`s role is limited to one course at a time, same applies to student`s role and non-editing teacher`s roles. CNM Academy user when enrolled as a teacher to a course is granted permission to do almost anything within the course but not outside the course while a non-editing teacher is able to teach within the course assigned but not make changes to the course or create quizzes or activities.
